SCORE the Service Corps of Retired Executives, is a voluntary, non-political association that provides counseling in business techniques to those thinking about starting their own business and to those who have already established a business. SCORE is a means by which entrepreneurial dreams are realized. Retired executives who enjoyed success in their fields freely give of their time and knowledge to help others succeed. Their satisfaction is knowing they are contributing to the common good, and seeing others succeed. Started in 1964 by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and headquartered in Washington D.C., SCORE is a corps of 13,000 active and retired business people in almost 600 chapters. Anyone interested in starting a business or has an existing business may request guidance from SCORE. The Counseling is confidential and person-to-person. There is no charge. A SCORE counselor will help business owners understand their business idea; grasp the basics of business management; comprehend the need for adequate capital before start-up; understand how to manage time, people and finances effectively; understand how to satisfy customers, understand competition, and how to cope with regulations and paperwork. Frequent workshops are conducted by SCORE volunteers, and active members of the business community. Workshop topics include accounting, legal advice, advertising, insurance, business plans, and many other subjects pertaining to starting a new business. Thinking about starting a business? SCORE can help.
