10 Tips for Effective Recruiting in the New Year
 

Gear up for SCORE's March Recruiting
Month now. Here are some tips for
successful recruiting.
1 - Emphasize the altruistic benefits of
volunteering.
Tell potential members
that becoming a SCORE volunteer is an
opportunity to respond to community
small business needs and to make a
meaningful difference.
2 -  Personalize your invitation. A personal
appeal is the most effective approach.
Asking someone to volunteer one-on-one
is the best way to recruit volunteers.
3 - Be prepared. Develop a three-minute
pitch that gives an overview of SCORE's
counseling and training program in your
area. Communicate SCORE's mission and
the benefits of SCORE volunteerism.
4 - Be enthusiastic. Your best recruiter
values the work of SCORE and genuinely
supports its efforts. Share why SCORE is
an enriching volunteer experience.
5 - Target the broader business
community.
Look around for small business
advocates in your area. Recruit new
members by spealang at the Lions Club,
Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club.
6 - Appeal to women and minority
members.
Your chapter membership should
 
be representative of the small business
population in your community Develop
new strategies to attract women and
minority volunteers.
7 - Approach baby boomers. Seek out
worlang and soon-to-be retired executives.
Contact human resource departments of
companies in your area to give presentations
on SCORE at employee meetings.
8 - Define chapter needs. Throughout the
recruitment process, specifically define
what slalls your chapter needs to better
address local business concems. Look
for individuals with experience in these
underserved disciplines.
9 - Use SCORE tools. To promote and
support your recruiting efforts, use
the SCORE Chapter Recruiting Guide,
Make SCORE Your First Choice in
Volunteerism brochure, and How to Become
a SCORE Business Counselor PowerPoint
slide presentation.
10 - Think ahead. National Volunteer Week
is in March and you will want to make the
most of those 31 days. Use this time to
define chapter recruiting strategies.
